In @realclearpolicy: I argue that #gerrymandering, though furtively embraced by many in each party, actually exacerbates internecine party tensions & undermines the institutional function of Congress when coupled with prolonged legislative gridlock. www.realclearpolicy.com/articles/201...

My essay is once again relevant. I am opposed to gerrymandering no matter who's doing it. I propose possible, tho admittedly imperfect, solutions. That said, I support CA's response TX in the short term. Ultimately, only Dems seek to abolish it federally: www.realclearpolicy.com/articles/201...

Globally, roughly a third more power is being generated from the sun this spring than last. If this exponential rate of growth can continue, we will soon live in a very different world, @billmckibben.bsky.social writes.

In the past two years, without much notice, solar power has begun to truly transform the world’s energy system.

Alina Habba in Feb: “On Epstein, it’s incredibly disturbing. We have flight logs, info, names that will come out. There were so many names hidden who had not been held accountable. Now it’s time for accountability. I really believe with Kash and Pam there will be accountability.”

On this 4th of July, it seems like a good time to remind ourselves of the principles of - and assumptions about - government that undergird our Republic, which are enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

What do you mean by "historically low level?"

Since about November, 2021, the Unemployment Rate has remained between 4.3% and 3.4%. A 4.1% unemployment rate is by now the status quo. And, the fact it went down because the number of discouraged workers increased is not good news. Quite the opposite.
Employers created 147,000 jobs in June despite economic uncertainty that has weighed on the economy.

The unemployment rate ticked down to 4.1 percent, according to a jobs report released by the Labor Department, a historically low level.

Art II, Sec 3 of the US Constitution reads, in part: "he [the president] shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed..."

No ambiguity. Clear & concise. A president is imbued with the responsibility & necessary powers to "faithfully execute" what has been passed into law by Congress.

Trump continues to just refuse to fund programs he doesn't like despite the fact that he does not have the authority to pick and choose which Congressional appropriations he likes and which he doesn't. He simply views himself as a dictator.

For the life of me I don’t understand going to the effort - time, money, everything - of running for Congress, winning, and then just rolling over. It makes no sense.

this court says that allowing EPA to regulate carbon emissions is a "major question" that demands congressional debate. but allowing the president to, with a flick of the wrist, end a straightforward constitutional right is something that must be allowed to stand?

If the Supreme Court thinks universal injunctions are unconstitutional, to wait until *now* to say that, in this of all cases, with this of all presidents, is a devastating indictment of both its impartiality and its prudence.

So am I reading this court decision correctly? We now have 50 micronations with their own laws interpreting the U.S. Constitution wholly separate from one another? But there's one guy with private law enforcement who is immune from all punishment who can do whatever he wants in those 50 states?
