Lovely 🥰 event for Melanie in the park she loved and helped to create.
The skies cleared just in time for a beautiful remembrance of Melanie Winter’s life at Rio de Los Angeles State Park, a 247-acre public space she fought to create so Angelenos could have access to their river. A mosaic bench by artist Suzanne Siegel will be restored in Melanie’s honor

Last week, LA's council voted 12-1 to formally oppose the gondola EIR

Today, LA's mayor voted in her capacity as Metro board member to approve the gondola EIR
Metro Committee votes 4-1 to approve gondola project EIR. Bass, Dutra, Solis, Barger support. Janice Hahn opposed. Final approval decision now goes to full board meeting on December 4.

“Where will the water go?”
After Melanie Winter died last month, I tried to write about her legacy. Only when the torrential downpours began last Friday did the words finally start to flow. Which was appropriate because, thanks to Melanie, every time it rains in LA now I think about where the water will go
A force of nature
When institutions threw up constraints, Melanie Winter's tenacity surged — just like the river she championed

This week at Torched I wrote about how the contemporary definition of broadcast rights were effectively invented by the organizers of the 1984 Summer Olympics right here in LA — which is interesting considering how we might not get any say now in how the 2028 games are portrayed to the world

The question about whether or not U.S. broadcasters are going to be manipulated by this administration is no longer hypothetical. And now we have a country run by "the greatest champion for sports of any president in American history" that's about to host the world's most-watched megaevents

Still my favorite shot from the day. There was only one place with enough space to guarantee a glimpse of LA's winning team: the freeway overpasses. Or, for a handful of fans who bravely scurried down a slope of spiky century plants, the freeway itself.

Let's just have next year's parade there?

I used to teach a course on the limits to growth, particularly Donella Meadows.

Basically, every bureaucrat wants to increase capacity with more inputs or outputs.

But they won't ultimately help unless you change the system itself.
LA is building a new $1.5 billion freeway into LAX.

The very same airport where we just spent $2 billion on the people mover — actually, more like $3 billion, plus another $900 million if you count Metro's investment in the LAX station; so let's just say $4 billion — to make cars go away
