The health secretary began “actively reviewing” whether the medication should continue to be prescribed to children under 18 after new evidence was presented from leading Finnish and Swedish clinicians, the New Statesman has revealed. Cross-sex hormones are drugs that bring about largely irreversible changes, such as causing females to develop deeper voices and initiating breast growth in males. Last week it was disclosed in a High Court case that the government was reviewing the “next steps”, including potentially banning the prescription of the drugs to young people — similar to the ban on puberty blockers last year. The disclosure came during an attempt to bring a judicial review, which was ultimately rejected, against Streeting’s decision not to ban cross-sex hormones for children at the same time that he banned puberty blockers. Representing Streeting, the barrister Iain Steele said the decision by the government to seek advice from an expert working group set up by NHS England was based on new evidence presented in the case. It has now emerged that this consists of reports by Professor Jovanna Dahlgren, from Sweden, and Professor Riittakerttu Kaltiala, from Finland, who have worked with hundreds of genderquestioning children and outlined concerns about the dangers of the drugs. The Department for Health and Social Care said that “children’s healthcare must always be led by evidence”. It added: “We are continuing our work with the NHS to reform gender services to ensure young people receive timely, holistic care and support, while reviewing the use of cross-sex hormones in line with recommendation eight of the Cass review.” #TransAgendaClips
