Welcome to new followers. I’m a Washington Post reporter covering politics and public health.

My big focus right now: trying to understand what RFK Jr’s role will be in a Trump administration, what he wants to do, and how he could do it.

Some background on the Trump-RFK alliance here:
RFK Jr. set for major food, health role in potential Trump administration
The longtime anti-vaccine activist may be tapped as a White House czar, overseeing agencies responsible for vaccine approvals, food safety and other priorities.

Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy say they want to end our biannual clock changes.

It’s true that most Americans don’t like the changes. But there’s no consensus on what’s better.

(And also noted in the story: it’s not clear to me whether Elon and Vivek are serious or shitposting… er, “spitballing.”)
No more daylight saving time? Musk, Ramaswamy muse on ending clock changes.
The “Department of Government Efficiency” may target the century-old practice, the men suggested on social media. It was not immediately clear whether they were serious.

What is clear: Musk and Ramaswamy’s DOGE is eying health-care cuts, as they publicly float some ideas and privately get briefed on issues such as alleged fraud in the Affordable Care Act marketplaces.

Will it matter? Some serious people are taking DOGE seriously. Wrote a bit about that too.

“Healthcare is a critical frontier for DOGE,” Vivek Ramaswamy wrote on X last month

Back in 2017, I had a long convo with @benwikler.bsky.social about the strategy he was helping lead to fight ACA repeal.

WIKLER: The number one legislative agenda item for GOP is on a knife’s edge right now … that is a huge tribute to the constant pressure from constituents who refuse to give up.

Here’s that full conversation from July 2017 with @benwikler.bsky.social, as he discussed the tactics to slow down a Republican health-care repeal bill that was initially seen as inevitable.

For context — this conversation was taped a few days before John McCain fatefully voted 👎 on ACA repeal.
Ben Wikler: ‘The Resistance’ isn’t futile | POLITICO's Pulse Check
The Senate GOP is pushing forward with plans to roll back all or part of the Affordable Care Act, threatening insurance coverage for millions of Americans. A devastating moment for progressives? Not a...

Thinking of this convo because Wikler — who became chair of Wisconsin’s Democratic party — this weekend launched a bid for national DNC chair. (And the ACA repeal fight helped put him on the national map.)
If we’re going to take on Trump, Republican extremists, and move our country forward, the Democratic Party needs to be stronger. I'm running for Chair of the Democratic National Committee to unite the party, fight everywhere, and win. Join me. 🧵

New: Trumpworld is blurring the lines between politician and influencer.

The next health secretary is hawking an at-home boxing game. The next Medicare head is shilling for a supplement store. And many others are boosting books, podcasts and their personal brands.

Generally, pediatricians aren’t ready for this.

The generations that placed those diseases high in a DDx &/or could recognize them instantly are dead or retired.

Mid-levels aren’t ready, either.

Trump’s former FDA commissioner on RFK Jr and vaccines today.

“If he follows through on his intentions … it will cost lives,” said @scottgottliebmd.bsky.social.

Gottlieb laid out several scenarios linked to the effect of falling vaccination rates, such as a rise in child measles deaths.
