In 2024, Tierra Walker was sick and getting sicker. She was also pregnant.

She knew abortion was illegal in Texas, but thought there was an exception for women like her, whose health was at risk. Doctors told her there was no emergency.

Then she died.

It is not the first time such on-the-nose grief has been observed in this endangered population. In January, orca J35 carried a dead baby for at least five days. J35 had previously made world headlines in 2018 when she carried her dead calf for 17 days and 1,000 miles. From @kuow.org

Acetaminophen remains a safe pain relief option during pregnancy. Despite recent unfounded claims, there’s no clear evidence linking prudent use to fetal development issues. ACOG's guidance remains. When needed in pregnancy, acetaminophen should be used in moderation, after consulting a doctor.

When we pretend that stillbirth (and pregnancy loss) is nonexistent, the natural urge after is to blame.

This is a very sad story of an intended parent blaming the surrogate -- even though IVF doubles if not triples the risk of stillbirth.
An extreme case, to be sure, but one that illustrates just how thorny surrogacy is—something many people prefer not to think about.
