What a time to choose to be opposed to moral clarity...
The Left’s New Moralism Will Backfire
Under Trump, progressives have embraced the rhetoric of “moral clarity.” It won’t help their cause.

Just my Lyft driver casually flossing while blasting a love life self-help book at bone rattling volume.

Send help.

No great insight, but strikes me that many things seen as repressive in China have been relatively normative in the US for quite some time:
- state/media narratives dissonant to experience
- inability to reconcile violence to that narrative
- paranoid shut down of any mass action for "security"
Life Has Gotten Surreal in China
The state is ever more insistent on a reality at odds with people’s experience. That’s not a good sign for progress.

So, two guys in their 30s:

One operates as shadow-president, starting concentration camps and establishing an enormous secretive second military.

The other won a mayoral primary and wants to make public transit better.

I think we all know who the dangerous radical is here.

My son got a book of baseball jokes as a gift.

Me: Share a funny one!
Him: There aren't any
Me: Just pick one.
Him: *reads nonsensical vaguely baseball related sentences*
Me: *grabs book and flips through 50 pages of AI slop formatted into "jokes"*

So glad for the future!

Explaining this timeline to my 90s era self: "So you see, Teen Vogue, Wired Magazine and Rolling Stone are the only publications left in the fight to save democracy from Donald Trump and the richest man in the world, a wannabe-Nazi-tech-lord trying to populate Mars with his children."

Beyond raw force, power needs our imaginations to exist. Don't give it to them. Imagining a better world matters as much as anything.
I've spent a long time thinking about power and our imaginations. I was recently asked to sum up my academic work in 600 words (shared below). If even that needs a TLDR; power depends on imagination, making it the frontline of subversive possibility.

Been sitting with this essay by Henri Lefebvre. An evergreen critique (originally written in the 80s), but it seems particularly potent in the ideological craze for AI... www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HCf...

The multiplicity of self-protecting power structures feels unending these days. Subverting that power is the only way forward. It's very risky to individuals, especially in the short term, but the long term consequences are far worse. We will need to do it together.
