EU countries also pay less to service their debts than the United States.

This gives the EU the industrial heft and financial firepower to support Ukraine and embark on domestic rearmament as President Trump abandons Kyiv and NATO.

I wrote a new piece for foreign policy.

The US's postwar role as guarantor of Europe’s security is over – and may even turn adversarial. But Europe has an overlooked trump card.

When it comes to manufacturing Europe blows the US out of the water.

Thread.

Here we are: and as planned, Europe is not ready to provide the backfill. We need to place orders now. Most urgent may be to look at SATCOM: to what extent could OneWeb a degraded substitute to StarLink, just to keep UA online before they shut it down? www.nytimes.com/2025/03/03/u...

IMO, the appropriate European reaction should be:
1. Massive increase in European weapons and ammo production
2. Massive European increase in aid for Ukraine
3. Cancel any US arms contracts where European alternative exist, or which are bad value for the money (AH-64s etc.)

Sławomir Mentzen, the Trumpian politician whose poll numbers suggest he could make the run-off in the Polish presidential elections, had this to say in 2019. “We don’t want Jews, homosexuals, abortion, taxes and the European Union.”

Sadly, it seems that Russia’s supporters are more reliable and motivated than Ukraine’s western supporters. This war has been a lot about who has better backing, and it’s a disgrace that Russia seems to be winning that competition.

A reminder that Russia has not gained upper hand in its war in Ukraine because it has nuclear weapons. It has gained upper hand because it has supporters (North Korea, Iran and China) who supply it with missiles, drones, ammunition, and are even willing to send troops to fight with Russian troops.

I well remember of Emmanuel Macron stating on June 13, 2022 that the EU countries must turn their economy into war economy.
They must do it for real. We're far from it.
This our war, not only Ukraine's.
We must win it, for the generations to come.
