A week into the new job. Love it. Found myself talking to people about when I was last working in the Pentagon *ten years ago*

Man, I’m old.

I ended my day by administering the oath of office to a new Air Force colonel. So it was a good week.

At the airport three hours ahead of my flight. As God intended.

Also, new LaGuardia is nice. I’m confused. We can have nice airports?

Had a great week in London at the Royal College of Defence Studies’ Pinnacle course. We considered whether AI is “Panacea or Pandora’s Box.” it’s inevitable). If you’re not betting ON AI, you’re betting AGAINST AI. I’m grateful to have been one of two US Flag Officers invited to attend.

Good morning to everyone except the woman in front of me in line at the airport Dunkin, who used three different methods of payment, gradually chipping away at her purchase total.

Not for the weak-stomached.

In fairness, parenting teenaged girls is also…taxing.

Of course the answer is “it depends,” but this thread is a great treatment of why/how “it depends.”
Pop-quiz: You're a #Marine commander and you fall under INDOPACOM.

You have forces with ship-killing missiles deployed in the JOA. An enemy ship is detected.

1. Whose decision is it to fire the missile?

2. How many Marines know the answer to #1?

This Marine Corps unit now has a ship-killing missile in its toolkit
The new tool gives Marines an offensive strike to clear the way for the Navy.

IRBMs are fast, but radars track them all the time (having destroyed an IRBM target using tracks from two different radar systems).
The target for the IRBM is not known until just before it hits because the missile flies through the stratosphere, far above the reach of radars.

That's why potential IRBMs launches are so tense — it could land anywhere.

One thing I love about our military is the learning opportunity. I’ve variously been an anti-submarine warfare, air defense, mine warfare, ballistic missile defense, personnel, amphibious warfare, and logistics guy. I love the variety and learning from Sailors (and Marines).

I really like this comparison (Dr. Schake is the expert and doesn’t need my accolades, but the explanation resonated with me)
My sense is the CCP think about professionalism differently, just as they're trying to define democracy differently. For us, professionalism is subordination to the state (elected civilians) with indifference to political party; for them, it's centering loyalty on the political party, not the state.
Is the PLA incapable of having professional soldiers? That seems chauvinistic and not particularly useful.

Then again, Huntington...

It’s a little thing, but I love when the CBP agent at the airport says “welcome home” when I come back into the US. Makes me smile every time.

How did it take me this long to read this book? I’ve crossed the Atlantic eight times in my career and sailed on it for weeks and months at a time. A great book, highly recommended.
