Tom is right. These people tie themselves in knots trying to come up with a complicated conspiracy theory of some kind so that they won’t have to face the terrible truth about their cult leader.
Why go for the complicated explanation? He's clearly been living in fear of those files. Maybe there's something else, but the first-order explanation - that he's in them and it's horrible - makes sense until there's more evidence.
I continue to believe that what’s in the files is irrelevant, because he knows what should be in them. Backup possibility: he has been blackmailing people by telling them there’s stuff about them in there, and it’ll come out that there isn’t, and then they will be weapons free.
