Incredible article in @theguardian.com today about the renaturalization of the Don River and the resiliency of the long-buried wetland ecosystem that is now thriving again. Give nature a chance and they'll bounce back.

The fact that there have been rolling closures at city swimming pools *because* of the heat is exactly why we need to take heat and climate change seriously.

Even the systems we have to keep us cool are, themselves, vulnerable to extreme climate impacts.

One of the reasons we need to remove more concrete and plant more trees is because all this exposed concrete absorbs an incredible amount of heat, even compared to concrete that’s shaded.

This is wild for many reasons, but particularly considering how demonstrably and irrefutably effective congestion pricing has been in NYC (not to mention in London, Singapore, etc.).
The new Ontario budget promises to take away Toronto’s ability to ever bring back the vehicle registration tax. Wasn’t likely to happen anyway, but still another loss for municipal autonomy. budget.ontario.ca/2025/pdf/202... (PDF)

How investing in neighborhood parks has transformed climate resilience in some at-risk areas grist.org/looking-forw...
Climate change is politically divisive. Public parks? Not so much.
Parks are popular community amenities. When built right, they can also mitigate flooding, heat, and other impacts of climate change.

New: my story on the just-completed 1.3-kilometre Don River extension, a billion-dollar project that restores the river's long-lost natural connection with Lake Ontario in Toronto. It's an amazing thing. canadiangeographic.ca/articles/don...

Can’t be said enough: the right in Canada bleated on for years about patriotism & people not being proud of Canada, of wokeness, reconciliation, statue removal, etc as the problem. Then they are first to lay down in front of a foreign strongman who makes them half chub horny. It was all bullshit.

i know it's cringe to post star wars as ~revolution~ or whatever, & that's not what this is, but I do think about this sequence from Andor a lot bc I know how paralyzing it is to feel overwhelmed. So, I'll continue working in the lanes where I feel the most needed/helpful.

The curdled libertarianism here is a consequence of decades of permitting and facilitating billionaires and the sundry powerful to get away with evading taxes, undermining democracy, and flouting labour and environmental laws. If there are no consequences for thee, no consequences for me.

The Doug Ford government paid experts $1.5M to tell them how to reach net-zero emissions. Experts came up with 18 scenarios; each one urged the government to phase out natural gas. The Ford government isn't doing that and hasn't released the report.
