Dear friends,

As part of my effort to move on from the academy, I am presenting my writing under the banner "Chimera's Bane". The first issue ("The Great Underwhelming", link below) is published. You can read it online or download the PDF. You can also subscribe if you like. ...
In fact the threat of separation should be withdrawn altogether. An extension of the deadline is not nearly good enough, and legitimizes the position taken by the management.
The New School is a beacon of higher education thanks to the labor of its faculty & staff.

I strongly urge @thenewschool.bsky.social to extend the deadline for faculty to consider separation packages, engage in good faith & protect the programs that make New School a globally renowned institution.

If there is one thing sustaining me and keeping me from succumbing to total despair and hopelessness, it is the encouragement and perspective offered by my much older, wiser teachers. A true blessing.

You know that Joan Didion quote about writing “to find out what you think”?

Turns out that conversely, if you outsource writing, you actually become more ignorant.
Am interviewing right now and one promising candidate had written an intriguing mission statement on their CV.

I asked what they meant by it and they seemed to not even realise what it said and then blustered an explanation.

It dawned on me that they’d probably ChatGPTed it.

I hate this timeline.

One of the best books I've read recently. Must read for all young scholars and anyone thinking of becoming an academic.

To anyone who was paying attention, it was obvious when ChatGPT was first released that it was an artificial bullshit generator. Nothing that has come out since has required any adjustments to this view. (Except, I guess, to recognize that plausible-sounding bullshit is sometimes what people want.)

AI and commercial interests have muddied the water of higher education so badly I have no idea how people aren't just walking out of the sector. Don't know how long I'm going to last here, and no idea what I'll do afterwards.
