In Ruth Marcus' new column for The New Yorker in which she unveils the Washington Post column that was rejected and led to her resignation, she points out that the paper's media critic Erik Wemple also had a piece disagreeing with Bezos' new opinion mandate nixed.

Milbank’s column somehow passed muster and ran—even though that required the highly unusual step of it being submitted to the publisher for review. Eugene Robinson followed, with a subtle column on the new documentary about Katharine Graham; the column made no reference to Bezos, but its paeans to Graham’s courage in the face of Richard Nixon’s threats evoked an implicit comparison with the current owner and his relationship with Trump. Our media critic, Erik Wemple, was less fortunate. His straightforward column disagreeing with the Bezos announcement—I read it in our internal system, and found it perfectly reasonable—never ran.

If you have a google account, first go to gemini.google.com/extensions and turn everything off. Then you need to go to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini and turn off all Gemini activity tracking. You do have to do them in that order to make sure it works. Honestly, I'm not sure how long this will last, but this should keep Gemini off your projects for a bit. I saw this over on bluesky and figured it would be good to spread on here. It only takes a few min to do.

Or we might think of the predecessors to the Greek crisis, the IMF structural adjustment programs imposed on so many countries around the world from the 1980s onward. I'm sure that to their hosts the young American economists parachuted in for SAPs looked much like Big Balls or whoever does to us.

BREAKING: Judge Deborah Boardman of the U.S. District Court of Maryland granted a nationwide preliminary injunction blocking the implementation of the Trump administration's executive order on birthright citizenship. The order, she ruled, conflicts with the plain language of the 14th Amendment.

Hospitals that are cutting off care to trans people under nineteen are the very definition of "complying in advance"—some, as I report in this story, even claiming, incorrectly, that Trump has "prohibited" gender-affirming care. But the order is only that—a promise, not a law. “President Trump’s Executive Order has not made it illegal to prescribe puberty-blockers or hormones to transgender people under the age of nineteen,” Chase Strangio, co-director of the ACLU’s LGBT & HIV Project, said via email Monday. “What the executive order is attempting to do is coerce institutions and providers to stop providing the treatment they believe is medically necessary for their patients by threatening all federal funding to an institution that treats transgender patients under nineteen with gender affirming medical care.”
