I'm an EQ geologist that is happy in a trench with a fault & my family with two minerals the hubs in there with me. Born at 334.9 ppm CO2 concentration.
FOP Ridgecrest! M7.1 stop today and 6 years ago with Olivine for scale. Scarp is modified by channelized rainfall but offset berm is still visible!

Did my duty for the Great ShakeOut drill and loved that @kcrw.com reminded me to do it while I was under my table!!!

These little earthquakes in Berkeley are reminding me that the ShakeOut drill is happening in ~25 minutes!

Felt that earthquake! Very lightly though - so much that I had to check our house seismometer!

@lastweektonight.com John, absolutely love you and your analyses - top notch and the best! But … you might want to work on your resting pause faces. Trust me when I say that my kid had to poop and I had to go support her and this is where I landed.

Chris modified this figure from a Temblor article which is modified from Shirzaei & Burgmann (2013) showing location of this very early morning's M4.3 earthquake in Berkeley along the Hayward fault. It looks like it happened in the zone where it goes from creeping zone to locked zone.

Seriously felt that one - woke 3/4 of us up! From our house seismograph.

Woo! Felt that shaker! We’ll see how early I can follow asleep now. M3.4 Pinole earthquake!

M2.4 EQ in Oakland! Didn’t feel it b/c we 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️ errands, so instead our house ChatGPT user (Chris) asked about energy analogies for an M2.4: 1)🐜 420 quadrillion marching ants; 2)🦍 7,900 sprinting gorillas; and 3)🐋 8.4 sprinting blue whales! 0.4=whale front or tail? I quickly put together a seismicity map for the region of today’s M7.4 Drake passage #earthquake. An uncommon location for a large thrust event in a tectonically complex area. 🧪⚒️

Donald Trump and Elon Musk have left Houston, Tampa, New York and other major cities without head meteorologists just ahead of what will be another busy hurricane season

This is straight-up life-threatening malpractice

People having been asking: "Are these cuts really that big of a deal? Could people really die?"

And the answer is: This exact situation, during a major hurricane/flood/tornado/wildfire event, is precisely how that would happen.

NASA JPL ARIA project analysis of data from Copernicus Sentinel-2 optical and Sentinel-1 radar images measured the slip on the Sagaing Fault in Myanmar. Quick preliminary map. More details later. Fault ruptured about 500 km (300 miles) in the magnitude 7.7 […]

USGS updated PAGER estimate. It's frightening. Zone of extreme damage is now shown elongated along Sagaing fault for >500km. 70% probability of fatalities > 10000 (~35% >100000). ⚒️ 🧪

These are probabilities, hopefully overestimated. In any case it's a massive disaster. Thoughts for the victims 💔

Today's #earthquake near Mandalay, Myanmar, had magnitude Mw 7.7 to 7.9.

Prelim. source models point to rupture duration & length of ~120s and at least 200km. It likely filled large part of seismic gap S of Sagaing (previous rupture in 1839) ⚒️ 🧪

Updated seismicity map for today’s M7.7 #earthquake in Myanmar: labeled earthquakes down to lower M (7.0) and included aftershocks located until now. Most early aftershocks appear to be located close to the mainshock epicenter. Also, apart from the one M6.4 aftershock, no M5+ (yet). 🧪⚒️

A Bay Area weather service unit that forecasts for SFO, all Hawaiian airports, California, Nevada and Pacific Ocean airspace is experiencing serious staffing shortages. The office currently employs just one meteorologist. Typically, four meteorologists work out of the FAA office in Fremont.

Staffing shortage puts office that forecasts weather for SFO in 'uncharted waters'
The weather service unit, collocated within the FAA office in Fremont, provides forecasts for SFO, Oakland airport, San Jose airport and Hawaiian airports.

#Thailand just hit by a very large (7.7) #earthquake at 1.26pm local time, origin Myanmar. Felt right across the country. Water in high-rise hotel pools sloshing down buildings, and the big Mahanakorn building downtown (if you know it) seen swaying back and forth. Too early for damage reports.
