NEW: There’s a disaster unfolding in Alaska right now. And no major network is covering it.

The remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska overnight. Homes, with people in them, have literally been swept into the Bering Strait.

At least 20 are missing. No comment from any federal agency.

At Grist, Laura Mallonee has just published a critically important article on the Texas flood recovery and how unincorporated boundaries are impacting equitable recovery. I was happy to chat with Laura about my ongoing research on these issues in Texas and California.

Texas floods showed why many rural communities feel abandoned in a crisis
Almost a third of Americans live in unincorporated communities beyond city limits, where disaster aid can confuse and frustrate.

I broke today. It wasn't what happened today, it was the Supreme Court ruling yesterday, and turning to my Black/Indigenous/Latinx mentees not knowing what to say to them. It was silence from white colleagues. It was having to tell my mentorship community one of our heroes passed away last weekend.

If *your department head and your dean* can be removed for supporting your colleague in teaching in their area of expertise, then you have no academic freedom. In a functional sense, you don't work at a university at all.
Faculty in red states are being punished for failing to signal in their course descriptions that their classes will include content on "gender ideology."

Remind me again which party was appalled by idea of "trigger warnings"?

I set an aggressive no AI policy in my classes this Fall, but took time to discuss it with students, expressing openness to changing the policy if they saw issues. All my students were like "the policy sounds great!" I don't think the enthusiasm to use this new tech exists in all disciplines.
My students, who attend a working-class rust-belt college, openly talk abt how much they hate AI & are afraid of its consequences. I wonder how much of the oft-reported student enthusiasm for the tech is the merely result of the NYT’s Ivy League bias
