What the authors call the "politicization and weaponization of government bureaucracy" is almost always the number one priority for autocrats. If they get a chance, they start by purging the civil service in order to turn government into a tool they can wield. They use the justice system to go after their enemies via targeted prosecution; they utilize other parts of the state - the tax authorities, for instance - to go after critics; they cut federal funding for universities; they use defamation lawsuits to silence the media. The weaponized state can also serve to reward friends via economic policy, government contracts, and regulatory decisions; these regimes use both "carrots and sticks" to bring the business community in line; they protect supporters from investigation or prosecution (or just issue a blanket pardon, as Trump did for those who stormed the capitol in his name on January 6).

The gayest of stained glass windows, finished except for ends weaving and some minor blocking

This is gonna be a tough one to let go! I've been working on it for over a month and I can't stop looking at it!
Crocheted stained glass window made up of a large center square and 4 ancillary squares with a Gothic shaped top part made from a rotated square/diamond and some filler rows to connect it together. The window panes are made from rainbow shiny variegated yarn, while the outlines are made from black yarn. The squares are arranged in such a way that it almost appears to have light coming in from the top right. The illusion kinda works!

Completed stockings!! Ready for a Florida Christmas (and many many Christmases to come with @effef.bsky.social)

I'm like a parakeet with a mirror, except my mirror is the things I've created with my own hands. Gonna be staring at these for ages.
2 completed "African flower crocheted stockings" based on an online pattern. They are made of granny hexagons, half of the hexagons are 3 shades of red and half are 3 shades of green. The hexagons are arranged into stockings and stitched together with ivory yarn with gold tinsel. The colors are alternated in diagonals, and each stocking is slightly offset from the other, so they are complementary but not identical. They're also huge, like at least 24 inches from hanging loop to toe of the stocking, which means it'll take more items (or bulky items) to fill them 😏

Two pinned together crocheted Christmas stockings made from hexagon shaped granny "squares". Half of the hexagons are 3 shades of red, and half are 3 shades of green, the lightest color of each in the center, and the darkest color around the edges. The hexagons use a pattern called "African flowers" to make the medium color section of each look like a six-petal flower. I don't want to sleep bc I'm so proud of them and I just wanna look at them Zuzu from It's a Wonderful Life, looking over her shoulder at her flower on the nightstand, out of frame. A chin belonging toJimmy Stewart (playing George Bailey) is in the upper right hand corner.

I'm kind of good at crocheting
Small crocheted blanket, using the corner to corner technique to create a pixel/grid art image of the Luke's Diner sign (yellow coffee cup and saucer with the name "Luke's" scrawled across it in brown) from Gilmore girls. The background and border are teal, and the blanket is laying on top of a sloppily made bed. The blanket is actually the center square of a crochet-along c2c quilt pattern that is available online, but I'm terrible at finishing huge projects I start, and my baby sister is having her second baby and it's time for me to admit I'm not going to finish the whole quilt for her, and she may as well enjoy it now. So I added a border. Same Luke's logo blanket, but straight on and photo taken with flash for better color visibility. The border on this little blanket is from a pattern called rolling waves and will provide a nice tactile experience for the baby the blanket is intended for. Crocheted stained glass window using silvery gray yarn for the outline/framing, and variegated rainbow yarn for the window pane portions, heavy on the pinks and blues and greens and yellows. There is a chopstick attached at the top to provide structure, and a crocheted chain as a hanging string. The decorative square is pinned onto a slab of Styrofoam for blocking, so when it is hung it will lay flat instead of curling at the corners. Same stained glass window but taken with flash, before I had done the border and attached the accessories for hanging at the top. The ambient light in my room is pink so all my non-flash photos make the colors looked v incorrect.

Gay little stained glass window crocheted granny squares, 1 large, with several smaller squares surrounding it, arranged in a verticle rectangle, with a single square rotated so a corner makes a peak at the top. I'll be filling in the open spaces to shape it into as close to a Gothic arch shaped window as I can.

Crocheting gay little stained glass windows to heal my religious trauma
Four crocheted granny squares designed to look like stained glass windows. The window portion of each is made with rainbow variegated yarn and the framing parts are in black. Following the Creggy's Crochet stained glass granny square pattern and another creator's pattern of a different type. The same four granny squares as the first image, but this one also includes a fifth that is partially crocheted, and currently has small plastic safety pin style stitch markers in various places. Also visible in frame are the tangled skein of rainbow yarn, my crochet hook, and small scissors

A vaguely cat-shaped blur with a mostly-in-focus face is on a linoleum kitchen floor next to a pair of shoes. Gene is obsessed with these shoes due to the outside smell on them, and spent a good 2 minutes rolling around on the floor next to them, purring and sticking his face inside them. I took a series of photos of the shoe love fest but this one is the best, because only his eyes and nose are in focus, the rest of him is a weird bean-shaped gray blur.
