Place I volunteer with here in Durham can tell you what they didn't get, too. Locals have stepped up to fill gaps, but that's an entirely different scale so each dollar's not going as far. Still, glad Durham has a big heart.
#ICYMI: ProPublica obtained records from the Department of Agriculture that detailed the millions of pounds of food, down to the number of eggs, that never reached food banks because of the Trump administration’s cuts to an aid program.

Microsoft said, "10 is dead and you can't 11 without the AI BS!"

I said, "OK fine, you seem not to have paid attention to Linux gaming lately." While the gaming on Fedora has been fine, I forgot that every cloud service in the universe was going to bury me under "new signin" alerts. 😅

Sometimes you just go hard. I hope I made the rock climbing community proud by obliterating that door and swag-walking in to get a massive soda I probably didn't need. 🤔

We're giving up academia and tech. We're starting a late-midlife husband/wife pro wrestling duo. We shall be Sugar Cain, whose finishing move is the Insulin Shocker, and Pol-karnage who finishes opponents with the Kill-basa. Deducing which is whom, we leave to the reader.

I'd pay to listen to @edzitron.com interview James Boyle (author of The Line scholarship.law.duke.edu/faculty_book...) and explore the legal edges of what all this machine learning means. Just let 'em talk about Disney suing Midjourney for a while, and maybe more people think harder about all this.

The line that distinguishes people from animals, systems, and things is getting harder to draw. For all the concern about AI and genetic engineering, there has been surprisingly little discussion of t...

I've given the algorithm no evidence that I care a whit about tennis, but it DESPERATELY wants me to know that an American won the French Open. Sure, I like a good sport clip from anything on The Ocho - but this is just "American win yay." Thx? Nationalism FTW, I guess?

Place I volunteer is serving about 30% more meals than they were, previously. Assistance agencies are losing dollars at the same time that a lot of "just getting by" folks are getting hit from different directions. Buckle up, it feels like the snowball has started rolling downhill. :/

When I was part of the vanguard for "coming out" announcements multiple times, I had a moment. I'm an accepting guy but not, like, a snuggly and supportive guy. I realized that if my honest, respectful, baseline acceptance put me at the leading edge of treating them nicely ... they were owed better.
I like people in general and I hate bullies and busybodies. Later, as I got to know more trans folks, I realized that the ones I met just wanted to live the quiet, unobtrusive life that I took for granted. And that honestly made me want to help more.
cis folks, i'm curious for you to share answers, if you want:

what made you start caring about trans rights? who'd you know/what happened? tell me the story.

I watched "Knives Out: The Glass Onion" (again) yesterday and it really is the movie of our times, right now. That you can identify each of "The Disruptors" IRL, multiple times, is nuts. Just remember (mild spoilers) - Miles Bron is an idiot. youtu.be/4HT5Wn1JcUM?...

Yes, pride is a deadly sin. But when your 13 year old daughter is recounting how she wrecked her friends in Mario Kart and they set it to 200ccs hoping everyone would suck... only for her to keep wrecking them? It can be forgiven. Even Dante would be like "No you go, that there's just human."

I need to know what Google thinks of me, as a person, such that my discovery stream this week contained this.

My favorite part of the whole artistic presentation is "again." Motown parody DOES seem to fit I guess, but just ... what?

Elon Musk’s team posted an online “wall of receipts,” celebrating how much it had saved by canceling federal contracts.

Now it has deleted all of the five biggest “savings” on that original list, after The New York Times and other media outlets pointed out they were riddled with errors.
DOGE Quietly Deletes the 5 Biggest Spending Cuts It Celebrated Last Week
The cuts, highlighted on an earlier version of the “wall of receipts” posted by Elon Musk’s team, contained mistakes that vastly inflated the amount of money saved.

We got about .5 extra inches this morning. North Carolina really isn't built for this so thank goodness it'll be in the 40s for the next day or two. That's somewhere between 3 and 4 inches, depending on the spot in our yard. :)

Ghost Dog is a movie that sounds like some sort of fever dream when you describe it to people. "Forrest Whittaker plays a samurai who works for elderly Italian mobsters. He raises pigeons and his best friend is a Haitian ice cream salesman who speaks only French."
