People are sometimes surprised to hear me say it’s easier these days to be a foreign journalist in China than three or five years ago. But it is. Though people here are nervous about speaking to us, the hostility is gone.
People are sometimes surprised to hear me say it’s easier these days to be a foreign journalist in China than three or five years ago. But it is. Though people here are nervous about speaking to us, the hostility is gone.
If you haven’t watched 好东西, that movie is packed with these vibes. Lots of sly references to things that shall not be mentioned (censorship, pandemic, LGBT, feminism… ok maybe that one was full-on), lots of internet culture, and very very funny. Just watched on a friend’s rec, highly recommended

-Upper-middle class urban China has become cool and fashionable! Little of that has reached foreign audiences except maybe through TikTok, because of the firewall and all those expelled journalists…
