so yesterday I installed arch again because for some reason the fedora thing was just broken in a lot of places. then today installed nixos which I mostly have set up now apart from a few things I haven't figured out yet.

installed linux again today, didn't want to deal with stuff breaking randomly so went with something fedora based: nobara, not sure I'm quite happy with it at the moment as I encountered a program that didn't launch without any errors (fancontrol-gui) which had been reported before and just ignored.
