Photos coming out of Western AK are devastating.
Hardest hit are indigenous villages off road system, many miles by air from supplies. Most built on river deltas w/ no high ground to which to escape.
Cuts to NASA/NOAA mean worse weather data. Cuts to EPA mean no grants for erosion control. Etc.

These are mostly indigenous communities in Alaska that have been slammed by the storm.
The local manager of a small airline fleet says he is the only one doing evacuations right now!
Defund FEMA and people are abandoned. Defund public media and no-one knows.
FYI, today is Indigenous Peoples Day.

Really worth reading Adam Serwer’s latest.
He makes the point that whether companies like Nexstar/ABC/Disney are “capitulating because of fear or because they see a financial interest in aligning with the administration is ultimately irrelevant.”

To say that the media is bending a knee, falsely assumes there are still hardened bones and a joint in place in their operations. Their mission now is to report the news fearfully and to seek Trump’s favor.

The Third Reich had an agency called the Reichskulturkammer, "Reich Culture Chamber". All singers, writers, musicians, journalists, and actors had to apply for membership and were ideologically vetted. Expulsion or failure to gain admission resulted in an occupational ban. Jews were not admitted.

In every country where human rights are under assault, the first target is always the truth. And that starts with silencing the press.

New, from me: I’ve been writing about the damage done at the federal level, but am also looking for positive examples.
Permitting reform in PA is one such case.
Rapid and positive change is possible by improving state capacity rather than destroying it.
