I watched it in grad school and was SHOOK. If you haven’t watched it, I’m not sure you can appreciate the significance of President Woodrow Wilson loving it so much that he screened it in the White House. The first film to be screened there, of course. It is incandescently racist.
one thing that is important to know is that BIRTH OF A NATION is so racist that people at the *time*, in 1915, were like, “holy shit this is racist”
When the slightest bit of research shows he was consistently racist and a daddy issues Confederate fanboy.

People try to paint BIRTH OF A NATION as a masterpiece with some unfortunate racism. The whole movie is racist, the “masterpiece “ thing was backfilled to excuse it.

Also to academic departments! Relational responsibility is a much better basis for hiring than fit — not “are you like us?”, but “are you going to uphold your responsibilities to us?”
This post by Olivia Roanhorse has been going around — thanks for flagging it @tiffmorris.bsky.social — and I can't stop thinking how broadly it applies (or needs to apply) to the publishing world.

This is what government censorship actually looks like: defunding entire fields, deporting researchers, and quite effectively chilling speech that helps people understand how our information systems are being exploited and calls out powerful people and platforms for their bullshit.
For the last decade, the pervasive spread of bullshit & manipulation of online platforms have been widely recognized societal concerns. Now non US citizens studying those subjects can be labeled “censors” & denied visas or deported from the US. Censorship, indeed. www.reuters.com/world/us/tru...
Exclusive: Trump administration orders enhanced vetting for applicants of H-1B visa
An internal State Department memo said that anyone involved in "censorship" of free speech should be considered for rejection.

So one, this is sliding into eugenics. But two, they can’t do that. They’re lying if they say they can. “Intelligence” is not a single gene trait you can test for in an embryo. These are quacks making false promises to make money from people’s fears about parenting

Wow, Adm. Holsey didn't leave of his own accord, Hegseth pushed him out. What looked like the SOCOM head resigning rather than do war crimes now looks like SecDef canning him to facilitate war crimes.

Congress should have him testify, and would've already if war-crime-sympathetic GOP didn't run it.

KOSA is back. This is the internet censorship bill!

And it's not just coming for SWers, it'll be coming for all LGBTQ content, because the people in charge view LGBTQ people as inherently pornagraphic!

We must push back even harder than we did last time we killed this bill 🔥

Be aware that another shitty bill has been introduced: The SCREEN Act.

If passed, it would require Full. Age. Verification.

Like KOSA, call all your reps & tell them what a horrible idea this is.

Spread this pls.

With ongoing pressure campaigns, not everyone can push 100% all the time

If you and maybe a friend or two can jump in "late"? You give people a chance to recharge their batteries, so they can take over again once you need to recharge yours

Its a marathon, not a race
hey. have you been sitting out on calling payment processors? i get it. phone calls are annoying and difficult for a lot of people. maybe you’ve been putting it off until now. well, i have good news: now is actually a PERFECT time for you to START calling. you are Wave 2!

Also, if you have huge phone/conflict anxiety, this is the cheapest exposure therapy you can have.

It's low risk/high reward, for something that is beneficial to everyone, with a person that is paid to be nice to you. Even if all you do is spend 5 minutes on a phone, that's 5 minutes they pay for.
