being an indie bookseller in the helltimes has felt both very stable and very stabilizing, and part of me wishes everyone could be on my side of the counter for a little while, because I think it would help some of you be a little less cynical and doomy right now. so here is my VERY anecdotal data:

Some good news 📚

#booksky
This February, we saw a 275% increase in new Libro.fm memberships compared to February 2024.

More and more individuals are choosing to support their independent bookshop—and their local communities—over Amazon/Audible. Thank you for supporting your indie with us ❤️

Your periodic reminder that, 150 years ago, a desire to read fiction was considered both a sign of mental illness in women and a symptom of it.

The groups devoted to banning some books because they're "immoral", "obscene", etc. are just growths from the same bad root.

This is horrifying.
Gift link.

The actual story of the shackled people being deported without even being told where they were being taken — maybe to countries where they’d face torture or death — while their terrified children cried.😢

The White House posted that pic with “ASMR” tag.

If you have student loans or have a child who filled out a FAFSA and haven't filed a complaint for the breach of your FERPA and Title IV rights being violated by DoGE, you should. Drown them in complaints and bureaucracy.

Hey #Booksky if you’re in the US and looking to step away from the zon for physical books can I highly recommend Thrift Books?

They donate and partner with non-profits to support school libraries in underserved areas, and prison libraries. Plus, the book prices are *very good*

Widespread destruction in Gaza is no accident—much of it reflects a calculated Israeli policy to make Gaza unlivable.

Trump’s suggestion of “taking over” Gaza and further forcibly displacing Palestinians would amount to an alarming escalation in the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people.

1/2 This is so infuriating. If this bill passes in OK, it will open the door for similar bills in other states and even at the federal level. This would make writing, reading, buying, and selling most open-door romance books a felony per the definitions in the law. #booksky let's make some noise!

Paying attention to what's going on is crippling, but taking a break feels irresponsible. I like reading dystopian stories, not living them.

The last thing I'll say is if you're outside of the US—
Look at what's happening as a lesson to take your country/local politics and elections seriously.
The political trends in other countries around the globe are growing more right-wing and are not so far behind what's happening here in the US.

If you are buying excess copies of anything in order to sell them for profit, you are the worst. You are creating a false demand that only harms us all in the end and makes everything more expensive. This isn't just Onyx Storm but live music, tarot decks, and a plethora of other goods and services.

another #BookishPetPeeve i have is the existence of exclusive/bonus chapters. 📖

why do we have to buy multiples of the same book from target, amazon, b&n, etc. to get different bonus chapters? 🛍️

how do you feel about store exclusive bonus content?
