"House owners", as in, well under 1% of house owners. Many of whom will undoubtedly be (often foreign) investors.

So, so sad they'll be hit with a tax far, far below the average growth in value of their notoriously reliable and profitable asset.
This house tax pretending is making me more insane than usual because as a renter I’ve had to move every 1-3 years just as standard because rents always rise. And no one cares. House owners get a tiny fraction of that precarity and suddenly it’s the worst thing that’s ever happened

The electorate aren't whiney babies, they're struggling. Just because Reeves has done the most notable actual tax hike since the 70s doesn't make up for the half century of trickle up economics that preceded it.

What point are you even making? That the public sector is actually well funded now?
Starmer and Reeves run probably the most economically left-wing government of past five decades and yet bleeding support to its left thanks to dumb strategy www.economist.com/britain/2025...

Details aside, I never really understood why there's a need to just assume history is inevitably cyclical.

New things can happen and new patterns can develop. We can influence the curve of history, it's naïve and intentionally defeatist to suggest otherwise.
James is chin-stroking about the end of democracy here, and I’d point out that the key issue for almost two decades has been a political/media class increasingly making it very clear they will choose actual Norsefire fascism over any kind of backsliding on Thatcherism, if pushed archive.ph/qBzgr

Some kind of effort should be made to reconnect schoolchildren with the practise of farming - mainly animals.

It's the worst example of how the modern world has babied us and detached us from reality, and it's been done without computer or internet technology.
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

All aboard the merry-go-round, yet again, for the ride of conflating the Israeli govt. with Jewish civilians everywhere, and for conflating condemnation of anti-semitism as somehow needing to be balanced with the actions of the Israeli state.

This is exactly what the terrorist would have wanted.

I would wager that if you were to poll Brits, you would find that they vastly underestimate the number of CCTV cameras in the country, and wouldn't know we're on of the most surveilled countries in the world
I realise the audience for this would just be "me, and also maybe other foreigners" but I would love to read something on why Brits, who are happy to live in a country where their every movement outside is filmed by CCTV, hate the idea of having ID cards, something plenty of countries happily have

Profoundly depressing that foreign social media platforms that are clearly damaging British society are not banned because successive govts would rather avoid irritating Facebook users than provide space for a regulatable British tech firm to plug the gap left behind by banning it
Increasingly of the view that British democracy is straightforwardly doomed because we have given politicised tech platforms total impunity to promote libel, conspiracy, violence, and race hatred
We’re so fucked:

1) TikTok being used to upload family videos which are inadvertently shown to big numbers because peoplestopped flicking for half a second
2) The profitability of libellous “what’s up here” Blue Tick X
3) the fact the whole town had seen it means this looks a lot like the true MSM

I always love it when people get up on their high horse about this, because I do know lots of people who were Tories for decades and are now Reform and let me tell you, getting to know them is a highly instructive and helpful experience with many useful lessons. Give me a minute here.

Just summarises how corporate our mostly private university sector has become now, I wonder how much these consultants made off of students and the taxpayer
I posted this earlier, but came back to it again. It's just unbelievable. Warwick's consultants telling people how to write terribly so they are "on brand". It's Beyond ridiculous. Or rather "Beyond is ridiculous".

This conversation about a wealth tax is ludicrous. Look at what happened to the countries that use one.

You don't see any rich people in *checks notes* Switzerland and Norway now do you!

I’ve written a lot about Labour strategy this year. With the first anniversary here, seemed a good time to pull it all together. Seven reasons Labour are in a hole, and six things Starmer could do about it. It starts with him and his dislike of ideology in politics. open.substack.com/pub/goodalla...

1/3 There are two truths about the IDF that feel almost paradoxical, which is why discourse is a mess

The IDF have killed countless innocent Palestinians, protect violent settlers, and have raised Gaza to rubble

The existence of the IDF has meant Jews in the Israel & MENA haven’t been wiped out

Why does MSM keep asking what she thinks lmao, she's not a Road Dahl character, she's an infantile lunatic
This is the second time this woman (“Britain’s strictest headteacher”) has claimed there’s a secret school in London she won’t name that has replaced Shakespeare with me. It’s complete bullshit of course but why’s she so obsessed with me

I personally feel very sceptical about people no longer caring about "whether the artist is human or not"

People already consume content due to WHO is making it, even if you can find better quality content doing the same thing, but made be lesser known people
7) That 70% will increase as the tech gets better and as people get better at using it. And, possibly, as people stop caring, to the extent they care at all now, about whether the artist is a human or not.
