I dream of a world where everyone has to navigate people's boundaries in variable and fluid contexts, because everyone else is able to bring strong social pressures against them through networks of care, and no one can appeal to power to stop it. For a lot of people this world would be a nightmare.

We collectively need to remind ourselves that the arc of history only stays bent if we are constantly pushing on it.

We can't trust the state to institutionalize movement victories, & we need to understand that the institutionalization itself is often done as an effort to defang liberatory history.

What we are going to have to do in the coming years is build out a whole lot of parallel institutions that can do the work previously assigned to the state, most especially civic education.

Eventually I will find my way to excitement for that project but right now the prospect exhausts me

Violence against agents of the state is sometimes justified. Absolutely impossible to argue against this statement. At a certain point, maybe one that has already come to pass, we are justified in violently resisting these gestapo thugs that call themselves ICE and CBP.

I've said it elsewhere before but two things can be true:
- Trusting in central institutions is a bad means of informing yourself because they are subject to capture by corporate interests and the biases of their leaders (and have been long before all-out fascism)
- Conspiracy theorists are dipshits

It is not endemic. Endemic means predictable rate of spread and regional containment. Because covid continues to mutate, the wave patterns are random, and spread I global, covid meets none of these criteria. The WHO declared it no longer a “global emergency,” not endemic.

It's really underexamined how easy it is for 99% of people to he objectively wrong about important things, with real material impacts for being wrong. And this probably applies to me too for some things! But I think if we were all aware majority opinion != correct we'd absorb new information better.

And take, I don’t know, five seconds to consider that the people you dismiss as “scolds” might be another group of human beings fighting for equitable access to society, which traditionally it hasn’t looked super great to be against.

I hear and see your concerns. Over the weekend, a couple users hosted on Blacksky's PDS were banned from the Bluesky app and thus the Bluesky API servers. This was a weakness of our system I've been aware of and hoped we had more time to address before any kind of public incident. 1/11

Whenever anarchism — or any idea more radical than the status quo — gets dismissed as unserious, it's worth remembering the current system runs on things like "we put all the money on a scam machine that tells rich dipshits they're god."
"The hundreds of billions of dollars companies are investing in AI now account for an astonishing 40 per cent share of US GDP growth this year... In a way, then, America has become one big bet on AI."

And if everyone is saying The Thing, targeted speech crackdowns on people saying The Thing are that much less effective.

Like, if you are doing sensitive work or already have a legitimately good reason to worry about a knock, sure, be careful.

But if you're living a relatively normal life, not leading actions or secretly housing the undocumented or something?

Say it loud and say it proud. Often.

Call them fascists, loudly, ESPECIALLY right now.

Scientists should of course fight against the fascist regime, but it's a mistake to latch onto "democracy" as ideological draping.

Science is unavoidably anti-democratic, and that's a GOOD THING: just as voters shouldn't get to vote away our liberties, they don't get to vote away the truth.

Something I really really want everyone to hear:

One of the CORE principles of organizing is, you always leave room for escalation.

You have to have something to hold over your opponents' heads and leverage as a real threat.

Once your escalation peaks, you've played your hand. It's over.

People have to start actually learning the difference between speech that is confrontational and speech that is actually hateful in content, and also take the next logical step which is that conservatism is built on the latter and should not be let within a mile of any kind of governance.

I know everybody hates anarchists but just observing the repeat failures of so-called democracy to keep the worst people from wrecking society as soon as the marginalized get any rights at all, I'm like how can you not be one by now.
