My 10 year old son is the picture of confidence and optimism. His teachers recently started handing out a “homework pass” for achievement that buys the student a pass from doing a night of homework. He got one today and put it in a large-ish box he then labeled HOMEWORK PASSES, plural.

That passage on the right has always been my favorite thing David Brooks has ever written. Just a master class in smug obliviousness.
LEFT: David Brooks last month, portraying himself as America's foremost critic of American elites

RIGHT: David Brooks in 2012 insisting that America's elites enjoy "honest" advantages: they* work harder than the poor & middle class; their only flaw is not admitting they* are elites.

* "they"

they want to build an alternate reality that validates and coddles their viewpoints

the extraction class' goal here is to create a simulacrum of journalism and public interest dialogue where they get to redefine the contours in their interests
CNN has a show with a similar line. That the problem with this country is we just aren’t talking to each other.

It’s the kind of diagnosis that a toddler would land on.

Senator Durbin has had this explained to him multiple times. Getting rid of 230 doesn't help this, but will make it worse. It will make it impossible for smaller sites to exist (like this one) and will give MORE POWER to companies like Meta and X.

Why would Durbin want to do that?
Children are being exploited and abused because Big Tech consistently prioritizes profits over people.

Enough is enough. Time to sunset Section 230.

I had the privilege of playing with Tom Constanten once, at the Wetlands, when I was in a band as a working musician.

The fact that fans started a GoFundMe for a former Grateful Dead musician struggling to pay for medical care is heartbreaking.

Three years after Jeffrey Epstein was sentenced to prison for "procuring for prostitution a girl below age 18," David Brooks hung out with him at an event, which Brooks declined to disclose in a recent Epstein-files-are-no-big-deal column, and the NYT is fine with that.

Statement from the NYT, which is useful context, but still feel like you gotta mention it in the column!

Math. How does it work?
FOX: If you cut something by 100%, the cost goes down to 0. If you cut it by 600%, the drug companies are actually paying you

LUTNICK: What he's saying is if a drug was $100 and you bring it down to $13, it's down 7 times

F: Not a 600% cut

L: But it's 700% higher price before. It's down 700% now
