It is unfortunate that America is so far up its own tree it will take the military response deadly seriously and thereby scare people into accepting the militarised deportation scheme. Zoom out. You are a laughing stock. Your president is deploying the military against a dozen protestors.

If it has to A/B test headlines, NYT has no idea what the news its reporters find means or should mean to its readers. That absolutely tracks. Try investing in editors who understand the world and can describe it confidently.
THEN, variety is introduced! this is the part that seems least understood. we A/B test headlines, so a headline you see could be totally different than what someone else sees. on the homepage, some headlines are truncated for layout. and the print headline is usually different, again, for layout.
