Our Island Stories by @corinnefowler.bsky.social is a really powerful read. More than a historical exploration of rural Britain, it shows how colonialism haunts our present and interrogates the psychological impact of things too easily taken for granted. Like a good walk - it is best taken slowly.

As a colleague recently said, Birmingham has long been on the frontline of Fascism and racism. Enoch Powell's rivers of blood speech was made here, & before that, Oswald Mosley became MP (initially for Labour). Things will get worse & I'm glad this event is happening

The only thing I'd say - policy makers - is why not distribute money to several towns instead of wasting money making it a competition? Have lower-key, simpler year-long events in *several* places. And ensure it's a nuanced history of each town that's told. This, for eg. In #BuryStEdmunds
