A few weeks back, I told a writing class at Coppin State Univerity that AI can’t be a shortcut past working their thoughts out on the page, and they are much more brilliant than AI will ever be.

When you remember that "generative AI" is just a business product, then learning more about the product, realizing it doesn't do everything you thought it could, and tempering one's enthusiasm as a result is a reasonable response.

As writing centers know, context is valuable.

Text from Refusing Generative AI in Writing Studies: Premise 5. Writing studies scholarship has demonstrated that technologies, including GenAI, are never ideologically neutral. Digital rhetoricians understand that just as computer desktop interfaces, search engine algorithms, and email are not ideologically neutral technologies (Selfe and Selfe; Noble; Moses & Katz), nor are GenAI technologies, which are not only modeled on a corpus of text that contains biases and misinformation, but also on corporate capitalist and neoliberal values of expediency, individualism, so-called objectivity, and the upward redistribution of wealth and resources to the corporate class. Moreover, we understand the need to consider the material implications of these ideologies and to teach students how to think critically about how technologies, ideologies, and material realities intersect.

Key takeaway: the product doesn’t suffer, but the process does. And when it comes to essays, the process *is* how they learn.

The Senate is considering a bill that would prevent states from making any regulations on AI for ten years with no federal alternative.
