Escaped the rat race to run my own advisory gig. Still shouting at the telly about Brexit.

It was said that charging VAT on private school fees would result in a flood of children moving into state schools. It hasn't and it won't. Status is worth some extra tax to the well-off. We should tax it more. www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2025/03...
The rich don’t change their behaviour because of a bit of additional tax
As the Guardian has noted this morning: Predictions that adding VAT to private school fees would set off a wave of parents moving children to the state sector have been proved wrong at their first key...

The biggest shock of the Haigh resignation is discovering that once upon a time the police actually investigated a stolen phone.

John Prescott was a politician both behind and ahead of his time. Considered too bluff and old Labour to reach to the very top in the 90s, today his authenticity and class credentials would have been perfect to fight Farage and populism. Labour needs more like him.

Some of you from the other place may remember I used to do a parody newspaper called Daily Racist (last one I did attached). Thinking of doing a more generic fun one to cover Bluesky related interests. What should I call it? Bluesky Times seems a bit basic. Not everyone will get Blueskyvers. Ideas?

As ever, a clear explanation from The Secret Barrister. Whilst I concur that it's likely to be a waste of Reform's money, I suspect that Reform will characterize the DPP taking over the case as their victory. Would love to know which firm of sols is acting & whether they comply with the code for PP
I see that a collection of MPs have taken it upon themselves to “launch” a private prosecution, in relation to a case which is still awaiting a CPS charging decision.

What might be the problems with this? 🧵

Truss is nuttier than squirrel shit.
Liz Truss, speaking in New Delhi has said “Frankly, I think we need a British Trump. The question is who that individual might be.”

Brexit means... ruined opportunities in the international arena. No good complaining about it - it's just hard cheese, unless and until we rejoin the EU.

Matt Gaetz practiced law for two years at a private law firm. That is the extent of his legal career. He has been under legal investigation almost 10xs longer than he’s practiced law. This is not only a disgrace to all Americans, but the legal profession.
