I know there is a lot to doomscroll right now, but you need to plan some sort of offline activity and go do it.

Walking outside, going to a museum, cleaning your home, taking a nap, cooking some food, buying your favorite pastry; lots of options.

It'll feel better than more time on your phone.

i just read something about grief from C.S. Lewis and his book, “A Grief Observed”

basically, when someone you love dies, it isn’t just them that you miss, but the parts of yourself that person brought out of you that can never be brought out again.

i feel that with my dad.

Let me put this another way:

Top reasons why Cdn-US tourism is down as seen by Canadians:

1. Forced annexation threats
2. Fear of arbitrary ICE arrest
3. General dismay @ new US
4. Tariffs, levied despite USCMA deal

Top reasons as seen by US media/govt:
1. Tariffs generally
2. 51 State 'jokes'

In 2014 Dutch scientists left a hamster wheel outside, to see if wild animals would use it like their domesticated counterparts.

The answer: hell yes! 734 visits from wild mice - plus rats, shrews, slugs ("running" being subjective here) & even frogs and snails.

The apparent reason: fun. Just fun.

After reading Prairie Up by Benjamin Vogt, a garden space at the local public beach looked like a great place to try matrix planting.

This will hopefully be a thread with pictures.

Our local community has an ordinance of Suggested Plant Material that includes invasive species. I put together a new list of non-invasive species with the help of people more knowledgeable that me. It looks like my list will be used to update the ordinance! Fingers crossed 🤞

I never get to use my fur trade knowledge, so let’s talk about beaver hats. You can’t understand the history of the Americas without them.

Beaver is the best pelt for making hats. It is naturally water resistant and felts well.

But Europeans had hunted beavers to near-extinction.
We don't have anything like The Smithsonian in Canada but we've got a guy who collects beaver hats.

Never forget, a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users.

ALL ROAD USERS.

And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. For sharrows, it’s actually safer to NOT have them.
