I don't think the point is that these people are about to start a violent revolution. The point is that they're talking in a way that I've never seen so many normal people talk about murder online. These aren't edgelords. There's a real shift in the way the average American is discussing this.

Yesterday’s shocking assassination attempt on a former U.S. President and current presidential candidate has left us all deeply shaken. Regardless of political beliefs or affiliation, violence of any kind against anyone under any circumstances is unacceptable. At SHRM, and among HR Professionals globally, civility is a fundamental belief we uphold. Another core principle we are firmly committed to is inclusion for all. A few of you have reached out to SHRM inquiring about our recent statement on Inclusion and Diversity. As a global organization, SHRM is committed to leading on Inclusion & Diversity. Our insights and research starting last year revealed “noise” of a coming DE&I backlash. Since then, we have seen agreement on implementing inclusion and diversity. Equity is causing workplace divisiveness leading to polarization and hindering progress. We heard Equity is so polarizing that senior-level strategy discussions are derailing and employee-led trainings are being ignored simply because of the word. The legality of the concept is under question with increasing moral arguments of equality vs equity. In short, our research indicated workplaces are not making progress because of the E, which led to us making the strategic decision to lead with — and focus on — Inclusion & Diversity (I&D). To be clear, this strategic word choice is not a response to politically motivated polarization or pressure from anti-DE&I groups. Let us shift the conversation and the effort away from “terminology battles” and toward real workplace and societal change. Our commitment to advancing Equity, Accessibility and Belonging remains steadfast as they are part of any effective I&D program. We have not abandoned any of these important elements. As we lead with I&D, we continue to provide our members and customers with comprehensive resources and tools. We encourage you to adopt an inclusivity-first approach within your organization. We recognize that there will be disagreements, but we believe in the importance of civility and constructive dialogue. As you chart the best path forward, let’s remember that the debate of labels and frameworks is unto itself a great example of diversity and the need for civility at work. New member-only civility tools will be launching in August – National Civility Month. As we move forward, please continue to keep the family of Mr. Corey Comperatore, as well as the victims recovering from their wounds in your thoughts.
