Crossgates Mall ~ Albany, NY

1984 vs. 2025

1984 photograph featured in Malls and Shopping Centers, Volume 1. Brick flooring and wood seating areas are surrounded by plants and trees, capped by a mirror lined skylight with golden lattice trusses. In the background, the ticket counter for the third level cinemas is visible. Kay Jewelers is to the right. Today's view is substantially different. The golden trusses are still in place, but the mirrors have been removed. New tile work (which replaced pastel tiles that replaced the original brick in the 1994 expansion and remodel) covers the floor. The upper level balcony was extended out when Starbucks opened, so an exact replication of the 1984 photo is not possible. The third level cinema closed in 2005, the ticket counter removed. After sitting abandoned for years, it is now a children's playground facility and bounce house. Kay Jewelers remains in its original spot, but is heavily remodeled.
