⚒️ 🧪 Japan just issued a “Subsequent Earthquake Advisory” following a M7.6 earthquake offshore Honshu. What does that mean?

Also: what happened in the earthquake, and why did it trigger a tsunami evacuation, with alerts of waves “up to 3 meters high”?

I’ve relocated my base to Tokyo, Japan and took my first trip outside the city last weekend to Hitachi Seaside Park and Ashikaga Flower Park to see the spring flowers.

Looking forward to more trips in Japan, Europe, and Asia this year!

Public Storage is like a mausoleum - everyone coming and going, not really chatting with people, and minding their own business. Everyone respects everyone’s privacy and the unspoken truth that we all have way too much stuff.

Devastating photos and videos from this 7.7 quake centered in Myanmar felt across the region, causing loss of life, & even causing significant damage in Bangkok. Basically a large San Andreas type event in an area with old historic buildings, political upheaval, and displaced impoverished peoples.

A historical seismicity map shows several #earthquakes of similar size to today’s M7.7 in Myanmar occurred in the region in the early 20th century, but this section of the Sagaing fault probably hasn’t ruptured since 1839 🧪⚒️

Oh Noooooooo. Woke up from nightmare to see an alert from a real-life nightmare: M7.7 shallow (10km) right lateral strike slip quake directly beneath heavily populated areas of Myanmar. USGS pager shows high probability of devastating fatality count.

Great story. While I’m not a Dodgers fan, I will always be a Roki Sasaki fan. The plight of the town of Rikuzentakata and its Miracle Pine have always moved me, leading me to visit there in 2023. I really hope great things are ahead for him.
I visited the neighborhood in which Roki Sasaki lived before it was swept away by a tsunami.

I spoke to people who knew him as a boy. I spoke to people who knew his late father.

Hernández: Roki Sasaki's bond with Rikuzentakata endures, long after 2011 tsunami
Rather than distance himself from his painful memories in Rikuzentakata, Roki Sasaki has taken a proactive approach to preserve his more pleasant recollections of his upbringing.

Sorry when people talk about Wicked, the song that comes to my mind is “Into the Unknown” from Frozen 2. At least I’ve got the actress right.

Today, I’m remembering the victims of the 2004 Boxing Day earthquake and tsunami. This M9.1 earthquake was one of the largest ever recorded & it generated a devastating tsunami.

This video is Part 1 of a series talking about these events.

Realized a bucket list item today by completing a transit of the Panama Canal. From barely squeezing under the Bridge of the Americas at midnight, entering the first lock just before 6am to sailing into the Caribbean 7 hours & a nap later, it’s a day I will remember for a long time.

The beauty of Mexico ports on a cruise. First time ever having canned Mexican Coke and tastes way better than the bar gun Coke on the ship.

Shout out to the Mexico Secretería de Salud for telling me I choose the option with “exceso calorías”

I’ve seen more whales sailing into Cabo San Lucas than I’ve ever seen on the several “whale watching” cruises I’ve been on in California and Madeira.

We have just had a M7.0 off the coast of northern California. It is at the triple junction of the Pacific, North American and Juan de Fuca plates

Just to make it clear: this was a strike slip earthquake offshore of Northern California and NOT a subduction type event on the Cascadia subduction zone! So no significant tsunami would be expected.
(I am seeing a lot of posts that say otherwise..) 🧪⚒️
