I get the argument that teams shouldn’t be penalized for playing conference title games while other teams sit on the couch.

Just don't see the strong case for Bama. Everything is conference rep-based. Two losses doesn't guarantee you a spot this year, obviously. One verrry slightly better win than Miami has, plus they're playing worse right now than ND and their running game already sucked is now depleted by injury
