Master of none: costume design, astronomy, reading, arguing with anyone that will listen over impending environmental collapse, and being in love.

I kinda love how People’s Joker is sort of garishly ugly and vivid and aesthetically crass in a cool way and steeped in pop culture while TV Glow is very quiet and beautiful and meditative and at a conscious, disassociated remove from pop culture, and how well these two *seemingly* contradictory…

Osgood Perkins: the king of the seriously-unserious, unironically-ironic, deeply-shallow horror comedy. [I can’t keep falling for this!]

Campy fun with seriously good casting choices 🐒🙊🙈

During the week before the Oscars, we will be posting some of the best film criticism we've seen on the internet in the last few months, both about Oscar nominated films & not. First up, this insightful review of Anora, written by a sex worker who is critical of Sean Baker's work.

Watching Only Lovers Left Alive made me think: is there a movie/book with vampire space travel? Maybe with multiple generations of humans unknowingly feeding them?

Radically positive movie that loves and respects the complexity of childhood.

Uniquely tactile + immersive animation. Makes you feel like a kid!

Felt very…“this is art.”

Enjoyed it much more through the eyes of filmtok than my own. (Without even mentioning the cinematography choice). Anderson is the only reason to watch.

I mostly agree but I’d like to add that the visuals don’t save the movie; they are the movie. I’ve watched it 3 times just for the explosion and it’s after effects.
Bluesky is my safe space, so here it goes: The Oppenheimer script was bad and the movie was saved by its visuals. The women are so poorly drawn (Nolan is infamous for this) and the dialogue is thumping and heavy-handed. His films have a reputation of being intellectual but they feel shallow to me!

Favorite science fact! Trees don’t exist
Tree isn't a clade or related family, tree is a strategy! The plants we call trees have adapted similar structures to grow tall in response to some similar environmental circumstances. Treeness has popped up in lots of plant families, so this must be a tough question to answer 🤔
