“The board of trustees must realize that this is no longer just about Columbia…we can either succumb to authoritarianism or stand up against it. Columbia’s decisions will impact not just our present community, but the entire nation and world for decades to come.”
Columbia faculty (700+ signatures!) urges our Trustees to do 6 things:
1. Stand up for higher ed
2. Fight back against federal attacks (sue!)
3. Protect our students
4. Preserve academic freedom & fac governance
5. Affirm tenants of DEI
6. Protect research & provide backup funding

To Columbia’s trustees: Protect the future of higher education
Even before coming to power this year, President Donald Trump’s administration made its plans for targeting American higher education abundantly clear. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FR65Ci...

It appears that 2 things, Harvard’s strong stance resisting Trump’s demands & negative publicity toward Columbia’s potential agreement to similar demands, have resulted in the postponement of any announcement from Columbia re its capitulation to Trump. Let’s see how this goes.

What happened last night at Columbia was nothing short of catastrophic. In the blink of an eye hundreds of grants disappeared. In a particularly vile showing of this administration’s complete contempt for the long-term health and well-being of this nation, training grants were completely gutted.

study is back up, only a few days left to participate!
I took the study down for a second because I had an (unfounded) concern about data quality but please take this and share. I'll close in the next couple of days but the preliminary results are VERY interesting!

Please share!

I'm running a survey on how *U.S.* academics (grad students, faculty, admin., etc) think and feel about recent executive orders affecting academia (e.g., diversity, funding). Here

reminder to please complete this ~5 minute survey about the impact of executive orders on academia. Will only be around for a couple of more days and we want to make sure your voice is captured.
I just completed this survey and it was so validating to write out my thoughts. I'll admit that I scrolled past the last time I saw the link so, if that happened to you, here's the link again below.

Imagine if university presidents instead of cowering, called up their faculty too speak in a round-the-clock marathon across the nation about how their research serves every American who has ever faced illness and disease.

I wish I would’ve gotten as many emails as I am just a couple of weeks ago (into last week) when DEI was the target of attacks rather than indirects. 🤔

Quick reminder that if you have tenure, this is the time you need to use it. This is what it is for. This moment, right now. Sorry to have to inform you of this, but it's important.
We got a message from the university to remove any use of the "DEI", "diversity", "equity", or "inclusion" from all public-facing documents. They said that even "biodiversity" is being flagged by the federal government. We live in the dumbest timeline.

Some higher ed organizations who are loudly circling the wagons against federal funding cuts were oddly silent or circumspect about the earlier attacks on CRT and DEI.

I wish there was a better understanding that these attacks are coming because we failed to repel those.
