Why is inclusive participation in sports so important when not everyone is an athlete?

“It’s important because when we exclude trans people in one area of society, it sets a dangerous precedent to exclude trans people in other areas,” writes Harrison Browne. thewalrus.ca/i-was-the-first-...

We made scones this afternoon and watched Maurice (1987), a gorgeous film I cannot BELIEVE I haven’t seen before. Hugh Grant at his floppiest! These scones are best viewed while listening to the Allegri “Miserere”

We actually had a pretty non-nerdy wedding for two nerds. But the music we walked down the aisle to was definitely nerdy. I walked to “Ride of the Valkyries” from Wagner’s Ring Cycle and @baglieg.bsky.social walked to “Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall In Love)”, the version from the Tank Girl soundtrack.
Okay, the nerdiest thing at your wedding. Go!
STORYTIME.

At our wedding, my astronomer husband and I had a planetarium show (YES NERDS WE KNOW). The MC told everyone to get drunk first. During the show my drunk aunt-in-law shouted "SHOW US URANUS" and he had a whole BIT about how Uranus got rammed by something hard and let out a lot of gas. 😂

I’d forgotten how weird it is switching between IIHF hockey and NHL hockey. They just feel different. This morning we’re watching Caps v Canes.

Excited tonight to catch the one IIHF #MensWorlds group stage game for Canada or Sweden being played at a time I can actually watch here in Australia! I almost feel bad for cheering for Canada against this plucky Slovenian team. It’s just so nice to be able to watch hockey again!

I think it's a bit rude that I'm not able to purchase accessible seats to a theatre performance while the show is in pre-sale and have to wait and take my chances when the tickets go on sale proper (and pay full price too!). Just doesn't seem right.

This morning my wife (after experiencing a stirring rendition of my new hit single “Highpoint” to the tune of “Loathing” from Wicked) remarked that being married to me is like being married to the princess from Enchanted 🫅🏻

I’m doing a Book Bingo this year, with the aim of reading 25 books overall and with the order of my books being chosen by a random number generator. The bingo card came from someone on tumblr and includes prompts from “social justice & activism” to “romance” to “has an animal on the cover”

Psst…You want to know about the NASA website that spells out your name in Landsat imagery. 🧪

If you see this, you have to post a picture from your device without explaining it.

Being nerds, we were excited to get a letter instructing us to complete an ABS Household Survey. Being queer trans people, we were less excited that it only asked for sex recorded at birth & had no gender or sexuality questions. How can you get a true picture of our household without this info?

I spent the last two days being a Consumer and Lived Experience Representative and part of the lesbian-with-a-lanyard healthcare workforce at the Victorian State Government's Health Sector Summit. It was a pretty great experience!

If someone could locate my motivation to work on my assignment for me, that would be great! I think my ADHD hid it behind the couch 😭

I got to film a video the other day in the room where they filmed all of the Brett Sutton’s COVID briefings during lockdown. It was both a very cool and very weird experience.

I hope the students who watch the recordings of my tutorials enjoy the accidental blowjob motion I did on camera tonight while describing how one could potentially blow into a tube to screen for certain illnesses.

I did a collection of mildly terrifying but exciting things today OUTSIDE THE HOUSE that were NOT medical appointments! The reward for feeling the fear and doing things anyway was some ludicrously expensive (but delicious!) gelato that matched my outfit. I am now exhausted.

The first two books in this series were among my top reads for the last two years and the third is definitely making the list this year. Studying public health I've generally stayed away from fiction which references the pandemic as it makes my down time feel a bit like work, but these are worth it!

Ah yes, it’s daylight savings switchover day so naturally I have Christmas carols stuck in my head

My referencing app crashed and died so now I'm making like Elphaba in Act II of Wicked and singing "Fiyero! FIYEEEERROOOOOOO!" except it's "Zotero! ZOTEEEERROOOOOOO!" Apologies to my wife who is trying to have a Zoom meeting next door.

Just finished this month’s book club book…which I ALSO hated. We’re 0 for 2 😂! I at least had a good time last meeting politely but firmly expressing my opinions. A good exercise in assertiveness.
I joined a book club at my local library to try and re-expand my reading horizons and I’ve spent the last few days frantically reading this month’s text ahead of tomorrow’s meeting and hating every word of it 😅 It definitely made me feel things I guess…like loathing & disgust & rage.

I’m meeting a new support worker today and, somewhat appropriately for Valentine’s Day, it feels a lot like a blind date. I am extremely nervous.

The couple that sings together stays together - an old cowboy proverb
Conductor of the community choir: ok let's try in a different key this time
Me, who doesn't know what a key is: this time I'm going to sing like a cowboy
