Of course, pollinators — being the wily creatures they are — don't always strictly follow the rules. Sometimes they find shortcuts, cheats, and workarounds. Like this bumblebee burrowing her way into a California poppy that was ready to shut shop for the day, thus forming a perfect bumblebeerrito

Here’s Bermuda’s Kathleen for #RoseWednesday —hands down our most popular rose with the bees. Bumblebees and honeybees can’t seem to get enough. The flowers start pale apricot, then go pale pink and finish dark pink, similar to Rosa mutabilis. #flowers #bloomscrolling #roses #nature #gardening

For #FlowerFriday, here are the 2 roses in our garden most-beloved by bees of all stripes: Bermuda’s Kathleen and Clytemnestra. A couple of oddballs perhaps, but they’re practically indestructible, very vigorous and healthy, and a total delight. #roses #gardening #bloomscrolling

A bee on a Clytemnestra rose, which is pale pink with touches of apricot, and has a boss of deep golden stamens.

A bee on a Bermuda’s Kathleen rose, which starts out pale apricot, then turns pale pink, and then finally deep pink before fading. It reminds me of Rosa mutabilis, but with much smaller flowers.

I missed #RoseWednesday, so Friday will have to do! Here’s New Dawn, the first rose to receive a patent. It got off to a slow start in our garden (I could barely dig a hole, thanks to neighboring roots), but after a few years, it’s finally hitting its stride. #roses #gardening #flowers
