Trump's NASA budget cuts slam San Antonio's SwRI, UTSA
Southwest Research Institute could lose more than $265 million if the cuts go through, including defunding missions already in space. UTSA could lose $1.7 million.

5 years ago, amidst a different pandemic, I started a new journey. I had all the usual self doubt, but thanks to many in the community, I threw my hat in and will be forever grateful to the board who chose me to take on this role.

Puro San Antonio!
8 yr old kid got separated from parent. The crowd started a chant “Name come to the front.” And they did. And the crowd cheered.

Say what you will about bringing kids to protests but I love this city

Thanks to @texaspublicradio.bsky.social and The Source for having me on today to discuss HIV/STI funding problems. It's essential the community knows and understands what's happening.

You may think it doesn't affect you, but I promise you, you know someone impacted by HIV or an STI.

Thanks to Bonnie at TPR for sharing this story AND for taking the time to delve into the facts with DSHS and CDC.

It feels very vulnerable to share our challenges, but I am a staunch believer in the importance of transparency. The community needs to understand what’s happening.
Silence from the CDC on HIV prevention money spurred the state to request a pause in programming.

The money saved by ending these projects is pennies. The missions are already in space. Research is happening.
Ending science is not the way forward.

The decision to NOT vaccinate in this community was not based on Religious statues. Mennonites DO vaccinate. This community's decision was entirely based on fraud and misinformation pushed by the disciples of Wakefield and RFK Jr.

Seriously?
How is this good for health?
It is a new level of depravity to risk the lives of children in the next flu season 1) a child just died of a 💉preventable disease - measles
2) we are amidst the worst flu season since the 2015 swine flu epidemic

This is a tragedy in its truest meaning.

It's tempting to blame and shame, but in the midst of an outbreak, we also risk forcing unvaccinating families into a closet - fearing not just shame but retribution of some sort, and not taking their kids to the doctor to be diagnosed and reported.

It's tempting to blame the parents. They're at fault. But who is TRULY at fault are the charlatans who push anti-vax misinfo on parents simply confused and concerned.
The true criminals are the RFK Jrs, the Wakefields, the Texans for Vaccine Choice.

People who are fans of Les Mis know the original lyrics are about slavery & freedom.

While people who only know the finale would have missed that context. (& that may be why it was used).

However, nobody would use this song to impassion the persecution of DEI, immigrants, trans, or women. Nobody!

90 measles cases in TX in < month
26 under age 4
51 in 5-17yo
16 hospitalized (18%)
85 unvaxxed (95% efficacy for vaccine)
The anti-vax movement has been brewing in TX for 2 decades. Groups like Texans for Vacccine Choice *own* state legislators who push anti-vax policies based on misinformation.

14 measles cases in a population of 22,000. In a county where 18% of kids in public school had families who chose not to vaccinate. That's extremely high for an infection that requires 95%+ vaccination for herd immunity.
