As a kid, I was devastated that her privacy was violated. I hurt for her. None of the adults agreed with me. It was my first memory of being different. But it was also when my grandmother told me that you should never write down what you don’t want the world to read. Both lessons stuck with me.
"Harriet the Spy" is beloved as a story about a girl with agency, talent & gender nonconformity. It is underappreciated as an urban story.

Each semester I go in my classroom and I try to figure out what we would use to block the doors, if it would be safe to crawl out the windows, where we could hide if there was a mass shooter in campus. It’s such an indictment of this country how we have normalized these preventable tragedies.
