In the latest episode of Our Opinions Are Correct, we're talking about FREE SPEECH.

Tech leaders love to cite Orwell's 1984. But while they yell about freedom, they're pushing us towards authoritarianism. What could be more Orwellian than that?

Also, and not for nothing, but it's also ok to be paid, to insist on being paid, & to actively promote your work. You are not a renewable resource, & you need to eat.
I don't know who needs to hear this, but sacrificing your mental health for the pursuit of your art at all costs isn't it.

It's okay to take breaks. It's okay to set it aside. It's okay to live and focus on yourself and not the work.

You are not a renewable resource.

Nature’s changing colors makes climate change visible
The world’s color palette is shifting in response to climate change. Seeing these changes in nature firsthand is a powerful communication tool.

I interviewed a bird researcher once, and he said, cats aren't giving birds a chance. Glass skyscrapers also don't help.
I asked him what are bird ppl doing, as a community?
Fighting against large windows, he said.
Why not cats?
Coz you get death threats if you speak against free-roaming cats 😳

I'm gathering that Bluesky is less interested in long science threads 🧪, but I need you all to know the majesty that is the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum:

It can 'feed' on sunlight;

gives birth to live, pregnant clone-babies;

needs to be bacterially infected to survive.

How about as the early adopters of academic bluesky, we set the standard for newcomers by saying NO to all kinds of assholery and assholes in science? Just zero tolerance for hostile, aggressive, condescending, patronizing behavior, insults, or bigotry no matter who does it. How about that??!! 🧪

I also find this interesting. I think some of it that people are sharing the bad science because they identify with it. They want to believe their dopamine fast works and it makes them somehow smarter than other people. You’ve attacked something that made them feel smart.
Whenever I debunk pseudoscientific nonsense, some jabroni replies “you must be a lot of fun at parties”

First of all, fuck you, I am a lot of fun at parties.

And why is no one ever mad at the person who lied to you? You’re only mad at the people who pointed out you were lied to.
