To limit global warming, we need to manage the remaining carbon budget. This means deeply reducing greenhouse gas emissions, removing CO₂ from the atmosphere, and addressing the risk of removal reversals. Read more about managing carbon dioxide removals in our latest report – link in comments.

CO2 removal (CDR) is both essential and controversial because side-effects can undermine mitigation ambition and sustainable development.

As the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change @esabcc.bsky.social we advise the EU on how to navigate CDR opportunities and risks. (1/n)

➡️ Set separate legally-binding targets for emission reductions, permanent removals and temporary removals
➡️ Ensure the quality of removals

Today, @esabcc.bsky.social released its report on carbon removals in the EU. It recommends separate CDR targets, strong innovation support, integrating permanent methods into the ETS, a LULUCF pricing/reward system, and an "extended emitter responsibility" to fund net-negative -- plenty to unpack!

The ESABCC just published a 333-page (!!!) report on #CarbonRemoval.

Some recommendations on #CDR are obvious (separate targets, quality, CO2 infra etc), some go deeper (extended emitter responsibility).

But an underrated factor is that 2024 was an absolutely horrendous year for incumbents around the world 👇
