Having researched #Vote16 for 13 years, knowing the evidence and, crucially, meeting so many fantastic young people, I am very happy that #VotesAt16 will become reality across the UK! I hope that our research (@chuebner.bsky.social) has been useful to some.

Voting age to be lowered to 16 in UK by next general election
16- and 17-year-olds will be able to vote in all elections as part of changes including easier voter registration and a crackdown on foreign interference

The UK government proposes to lower the voting age to 16 #vote16 This is a landmark moment for all the young people (+ some older ones) who campaigned for this for years. It's been a privilege to work & do research with young people on #VotesAt16 in Scotland and Wales www.jrrt.org.uk/evidence-and...

There's no way "over half of Gen Z want a dictator" - our new study gets more like 6%

This is vital to get right - we're sowing generational division, giving fake momentum to the sense that young people are rejecting democracy + missing the real message

theconversation.com/only-6-of-ge...
Only 6% of gen Z actually favour dictatorship – not half, as some reports would have you believe
Gen Z don’t hate democracy, they have a problem with the way it is being delivered.

Siehe #Linke #Reichinnek

Given what gen Z have been through, it’s no wonder they’re not impressed by democracy. But giving them a real stake in it could change everything For God’s sake don’t give them the vote! Many people said that after a shocking poll published this week…

With @eichhornjan.bsky.social I wrote about our data on the longer-term outcomes of the lowering of the voting age in Scotland in @cogitatiopag.bsky.social. With all things that were unique in Scotland in 2014/15, seven years after the start of #Vote16 16/17s still vote more often than 18+ year olds
In a new article for @cogitatiopag.bsky.social on #Vote16, @chuebner.bsky.social & I show that young people (16-31) first enfranchised at 16/17 had greater turnout in the '21 Scottish Parliament elections than those who were 18+ at their first vote. @dpart.bsky.social @uoe-sps.bsky.social #VotesAt16

On 28 January, join @moorsee.bsky.social, @chuebner.bsky.social and @marcusflucker.bsky.social to discuss the introduction of votes at 16 in Westminster elections.

In particular, how might teaching about politics in schools need to change?
