Late in the afternoon of August 30, 1944, the Cape Breton Highlanders (part of 11th Canadian Infantry Brigade, 5th Canadian Armoured Division) were sent to take Point 120, a hilltop feature near the Gothic Line. They were told that intelligence indicated there were no enemy on the hill.
