Sadly I haven’t been back to San Diego for many years. I recall an Assassins Creed obstacle course in front of SDCC in the early 2010s I think?

I used to teach legal research and writing, and spent years drafting published opinions for judges 😉 My writing probably does read that way 😆

Song of Storms is another of my favorites, which I frequently still catch myself humming.

The grand scale of the game, highlighted in rich environments spanning across stages of life is breathtaking. This beautiful game deserves all the praise it has garnered over the years ❤️ 7/7

The Temples and dungeons are incredible to explore and solve, each with unique challenges (and sometimes frustrations)!

The music is exceptional and heart stirring. I still love familiar tune at Start Screen, evoking yet building upon the iconic Recorder melody from the original game. 6/?

There is so much to love about this treasure. The Temple of Time itself is simply majestic, and the emotional impact of Link’s transition between childhood and adulthood powerful. The devastation to Hyrule over time is expertly showcased as Link revisit areas and people, notably Kokiri Forest. 5/?

Twelve core songs for the Ocarina are uncovered, which enable progress through warping, changing the time of day, changing weather, and interacting with other characters. There is an optional thirteenth song that can be learned from the scarecrows in the Lost Woods.

To do so, Link travels through time to gather three Spiritual Stones, awaken five of the Sages to gain their power, & eventually acquire the Master Sword so he can defeat Ganondorf.

This revolutionary game introduced features like target locking & context sensitive buttons to the Zelda series. 3/?

Numerous publications have listed OoT at or near the top of the greatest games of all time, and it has the highest score on Metacritic. The story begins with Link as a young boy seeking Zelda at the Great Deku Tree’s request. Zelda implores Link to retrieve the Triforce before wicked Ganondorf. 2/?

She even went with me to see the 2001 Angelina Jolie film in theaters & named her SUV “Croft.” Yes, we name our cars 😆 What better namesake for an adventuring vehicle than a sharpshooting, treasure-hunting icon? 🤭

Tomb Raider’s influence on gaming is undeniable & it’s an incredible franchise ❤️ 6/6

I’ll forever be grateful for Tomb Raider, because it was the only gaming series my mom truly enjoyed. I couldn’t get her interested in Zelda, Mario, or Final Fantasy. Her first career was in archaeology (and she’s coincidentally British), so she was immediately intrigued by the game. 4/?

The game’s originally conceived protagonist too closely resembled Indy, so creator Toby Gard redesigned the character. He developed a concept where players could choose either a male or female protagonist but scrapped the male design to focus on the female character, which he preferred. 3/?

Players guide Lara through tombs and other locations across Peru, Greece, Egypt, and Atlantis, searching for treasures and artifacts (artefacts), most notably the Scion of Atlantis, while solving puzzles and battling animals and monsters. 2/?

I did, though, learn basic wall-scaling & short push jumps between platforms. I still giggle that being a gaming nerd inspired me to explore such a challenging activity! I made incredible friends (many also loved Prince of Persia), & I went every week for over a year.

Highly recommended! 6/6

Funny story: when I first played Prince of Persia, parkour was gaining popularity (and even featured in PoP commercials!), and it inspired me to give it a try. I used to go to weekly “jams” at Balboa Park in San Diego. I never quite reached the skill level I hoped for. 5/?

Puzzles are solved through wall-running, jumping across pits, & evading traps. The time-reversing dagger lets players undo mistakes, which was a groundbreaking feature for its time.

I adore this game. Its story, romance, and adventurous gameplay all came together into an incredible experience.

The Sands transform everyone into monsters except the Prince, the Vizier, and a princess named Farah, each protected by a magical artifact. One such artifact is a dagger that can reverse time.

Players guide the Prince from a 3rd-person perspective, manipulating blocks & levers to solve puzzles. 3/?

Sands of Time masterfully blends action-adventure, platforming, and puzzle elements as it follows a Prince’s journey to undo the devastation caused when a wicked Vizier tricks him into releasing the Sands upon the world. 2/?

It can be challenging to make time for fun as adults amidst responsibilities, but it was truly wonderful to revisit classic games and finally unlock an ending I’d never seen before. ❤️

(Also clarifying Nov 88 was the North American NES release 😊)
