“As a neuroscientist, do you think AI models will be able to achieve consciousness?”

“Good question. Do you think they’ll ever achieve gloompfdewoompf?”

“What? I don’t know what ‘gloompfdewoompf’ means. Is that even a real thing?”

“Exactly.”

🚀 New paper (open access) out in Cognitive Therapy & Research: we (@herzog.bsky.social, @evalottabrakemeier.bsky.social, @hudsongolino.bsky.social and me) ask whether group‑level symptom‑change networks in CBT actually capture what happens inside each patient. #Psychology #CBT

Here, @timbale.bsky.social does a great job spelling out why virtually every expert on the far right (that I have heard from) rejects “hard right” as terminology for these parties and their ideology. Editors should really stop this nonsense.
Far-right parties are doing well – so it’s important that we see them for what they are. Yet, in the UK, the label ‘hard right’ is catching on. Why is debateable. But, argues, @timbale.bsky.social, this misdescription sanitises far-right parties, and we should push back against it

Traits they predict: slipped in there at the end of the list for "Neurological and mental health" is "intelligence". Just so you know.
To be clear: PGD for nasty and often rare monogenic conditions can be really valuable and important. For highly polygenic traits, the efficacy is EXTREMELY unclear.

I’d like to take this one step further: poor communication & hype often already start in sci papers.
“Because this study was only observational, no causal conclusions can be drawn” followed by a discussion of policy implications and theorizing based on a causal conclusion.
Poor communication often starts with scientists. You'll often find hype already in the press release or in the tweets. Scientists profit from hyping their work.

When science journalists push back and consult others, they are doing their jobs of keeping this tendency in check.

"Dysfunctional conscientiousness" - tell me you are anxious and perfectionistic without telling me you are anxious and perfectionistic. 😬
I teach a course where students pick a construct and develop a questionnaire.

Last year, a group chose "precrastination." They were the 1st to hand in their assignment.

This year, a group chose "dysfunctional conscientiousness." I just received their final report, >1 week before the deadline 😭
