My action item for the week is about measles. Super contagious & awful. Those of us born between 1957 & 1989 got less effective childhood vaccinations.

So I’m getting my MMR boost Monday - join me!

And then talk to your people about it. Vaccine science & scicomm are urgent priorities.
(5/6)
Anyway, to my IMMENSE surprise, the blood test was *negative* for measles immunity! 😱 Apparently I’m one of the unlucky few for whom the vaccine wore off, for unknowable reasons. So today I got a new MMR shot, and next month I’ll get a second. I’m very glad I checked!

This morning I was talking with a group of senior scientists about this. It makes us feel like raving conspiracists just by explaining the bare facts. The most sober read out sounds like hyperbole and catastrophizing. It’s not.
I truly think people don’t realize how many universities and colleges — especially public ones — may shut down if restrictions on and withholding of federal funding persists for even one presidency

We are facing the demolition of American higher education

Devastating for US researchers. Today I also saw that Pfizer’s CEO thinks the opportunities with Trump ‘clearly outweigh’ the risks for pharma. Where does pharma think all the new discoveries will be made? The shortsightedness is ASTOUNDING
The court ordered that NIH grant funding be unfrozen, so The Regime found a way around it. For NIH grants to be funded, a review panel must rank them. In order for a review panel to meet, they must post it on the Federal Register. Submissions to the Federal Register are now on hold “indefinitely”.

"This feels like the early days of the pandemic, except there's less I can do about it", a colleague told me yesterday. Yep.

One thing you *can* do is outreach. My sense is that the majority of the country doesn't yet understand the scale or the stakes of what is happening.

We have to tell them:
Join us! Science Homecoming helps scientists reconnect with communities by writing about the importance of science funding in their hometown newspapers. We’ve mapped every small newspaper in the U.S. and provide resources to get you started. Help science get back home 🧪🔬🧬 🏠

This reminds of of every time someone told me “science wasn’t political” since 2016
One of the questions after my talk today was about scientists refusing to buck the administration because they fear losing their jobs.

I said that a lot of self-styled apolitical scientists lost their jobs this week, so silence will not save them. Respond and keep your values and dignity.
