The Pope vs. the Algorithm
In his speech to filmmakers last weekend, Pope Leo XIV showed he’s been paying serious attention to the issues facing cinema as an art form.

Best sign of a great piece of writing is it’s on a subject you have absolutely zero time for and you read every word. open.substack.com/pub/theparis...

🇮🇹 Italian journalist dismissed after asking question on Gaza

Gabriele Nunziati was recently dismissed by his employer, the Agenzia Nova agency, after asking a question about Gaza at the European Commission. The incident has raised concerns around press freedom in European countries.

Life-affirming works in the #AGNSW #NaalaBadu: indigenous works in the Yiribana Gallery 1/2 While I was looking at the old ceremonial shield a security officer came and stood so close to me that I could feel his breath.

Life-sapping works in #AGNSW #NaalaBadu: despite the wonderful individual works in the #KaldorPublicArtProject 38: Thomas Demand ‘The Object Lesson’, I found the whole display energy-sapping, like being in a huge Bunnings. Thanks Thomas, nice try but get a curator 🙁

A lovely little exhibition in the #AGNSW #NaalaBadu ‘It Takes a Village’, “a celebration of family and community”, including Marikit Santiago’s wonderful painting ‘Thy Kingdom Come’.

Drink at #TheWharf. After getting rid of fine dining Wharf Restaurant they had the drop-in informal ‘Bar at the End of the Wharf’ but have now reinstated ‘The Wharf Restaurant and Bar’: “wait here to be seated” except it looks just the same. I just want to sit and relax!

#Wharf1 #STC Whitefella Yella Tree. Great premise (during English settlement two 15-yo boys meet as messengers from adjoining peoples and fall in love, re-establishing pre-Christian Indigenous queerness) but it was pretty dull - the script has been acclaimed so maybe it was the direction: it sagged.

#Wharf2 #PlaywroughtProject The Taming of the Shrew. Swift & raucous version of a problematic play, this version has a nifty sex-swap - the matriarchs are bargaining over which son they can marry - and highly enjoyable performances throughout. Not subtle but lots of fun.

#RoslynPackerTh Lovely to see the kinetic sculpture high up actually working, making clearer its basis on theatrical trick ocean waves machine, the column wave. Sadly no credit I could find.

#RoslynPackerTh #STC The Talented Mr Ripley. After such a wonderful play Switzerland, it’s with great relief to report that Johanna Murray-Smith & Sarah Goodes have hit gold again: their adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s celebrated book is all-round superb.

#DarlingHarbour scenes including their clever ‘Dancers Alley’: reflective walls are an open invitation to groups practicing TikTok dances; here they create atmosphere and don’t disturb others.
