Really important article by Sam Freedman.
New post just out:

"Never again?"

On how the radical right are trying to change our collective memory about World War Two as part of their assault on the postwar order.

And why that memory remains a critical defence against nationalism.

Very good comments from Lucy Powell on trans rights. I will vote for her in the Deputy leadership election. I also agree with her on the dangers of groupthink, which this government seems prone to.

My understanding is that that Federal Reserve Board would need to approve a new swap line for Argentina’s central bank. Maybe they will, but I don’t think this is Secretary Bessent’s decision to make.

US ready to support Argentina as needed, Bessent says
The United States stands ready to do what is needed to support Argentina and is currently in negotiations for a $20 billion swap line with the country's central bank, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Wednesday in a post on X.

Full resignation letter from Demetre C. Daskalakis, a CDC leader, does not hold back.
"The recent shooting at CDC is not why I am resigning. My grandfather, who I am named after, stood up to fascist forces in Greece and lost his life doing so. I am resigning to make him and his legacy proud."

I expect Trump will say “You’re fired” to Musk at some point. I’ve seen several countries where a president worried about his ratings sacks a zealous or reformist prime minister who is even more unpopular. It sometimes works but often doesn’t.

I’m remembering the Albanian pyramid schemes as Trump launches his new meme coin. A key moment in their collapse was when new schemes entered the market offering high returns with no real assets. The collapse came a year later. There may be a lesson for crypto here.

I hated Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey but loved my classmate’s rewriting of the opening sentence: “No one who had seen Catherine Morland in her infancy would have supposed her to be on heroin.”
US and UK friends, I'm curious: What books were part of your required reading for highschool literature class? Which of them do you remember loving, and which did you loathe?

I’m seeing some political commentators, including the always interesting Ivan Krastev, comparing this moment to Reagan in 1980 or even Roosevelt. To me it seems more like the Bush re-election in 2004, and I remember that Bush’s authority evaporated less than a year later.

There’s discussion today about the risks of Trump firing Fed chair Powell. But should Powell be Fed chair? The Fed’s failure to recognize a change in inflationary expectations is part of the reason inflation was higher and Trump won. Powell failed in his most important task. Should he not resign?

I know Aurora, Colorado and I find Trump’s focus on it bizarre. Aurora is a typical American suburb. People’s lives are not dominated by fear of Venezuelan gangs. Their joys and sorrows are families growing and changing, making ends meet, play and work, being in nature and being in traffic.

This is deeply disturbing. I understand the need for discipline in organizations but punishing people for raising safety concerns is a big red flag. bsky.app/profile/gare...
In May this year, Peter Hendy pressured my now-former employer Systra to sack me by threatening them.

Why did he do this? Because I'd highlighted safety and accessibility issues at Euston station. He is unfit for office and should resign.

Vice-President Harris’s recent speech on economic policy was good in many ways. But it was striking that she did not mention any of the big levers of economic policy: overall spending or taxes, plans for the budget deficit or public debt, or monetary policy.
