Farrow and Ball say Dead Salmon “creates the most subtle and serene of environments suitable as a backdrop in candlelit dining rooms”. And if that doesn’t stimulate the dinner conversation enough you could always throw a dead cat on the table.

Part of my job once was to write them. My experience was that the most avid readers were the participants who wanted to check that the minutes reflected what they said, or sometimes what they wished they had said.

Your work on the curriculum is a very important part of this. Knowledgeable American friends blame the hollowing out of civics education under Reagan for the current state of US politics.

I like better the FT’s recent Q&A with Mark Sobel, who was a genuinely tough Treasury man. Sobel exposes the risks in Bessent’s macho posturing: the erosion of dollar centrality, the crypto promotion, the undermining of alliances.

My biggest shock playing Civ 2 was that nuclear deterrence didn’t work.

If you call your mobile provider they will offer a plan that includes a set number of minutes per month for US or all international calls. It’s not too much extra as I recall.

Why does it go back to what appears to be 30 BC? I mean there’s an obvious reason for that date but really World Bank?

Full resignation letter from Demetre C. Daskalakis, a CDC leader, does not hold back.
"The recent shooting at CDC is not why I am resigning. My grandfather, who I am named after, stood up to fascist forces in Greece and lost his life doing so. I am resigning to make him and his legacy proud."

I always enjoyed his column. A joke that has stuck with me for years is when he complained to the barman in a favorite pub that his beer was cloudy and the barman snapped back “No it’s not! The glass is just dirty”.

Doesn’t the Fed already consult Treasury and State before agreeing swap lines? If so, the administration already has substantial leverage over them.

“More Everything Forever” by Adam Becker is hugely informative and often very funny. It puts hopes and fears about AI into perspective and exposes the flimsy science behind the ideas of would-be tech overlords.
