Between 1795-1816 the hillforts of #Dorset were part of a chain of visual shutter relay telegraph stations for the Admiralty connecting Plymouth to London. The chain included the high Hillforts of Lewesdon, Bulbarrow and Hambledon and at the racetrack by Badbury Rings

A limestone anchor, found being used as a headrest in a burial at the post-Roman cemetery of Worth Matravers, Dorset #TombTuesday
An extremely rare find, it suggests the individual had connections to the sea, perhaps through fishing or trade.

John Constable's watercolour of Old Sarum: an Iron Age hill fort, taken over by the Romans, before becoming the early medieval Salisbury. The site was abandoned when the city grew too big for the enclosure.

On this day 19th August 1642, Hugh Green was put to death in #MaumsburyRings #Dorchester. Green was a Roman Catholic chaplain practicing in Chideock Castle when in March 1942, Charles I issued the order to ban all Roman Catholic priests from the kingdom. #Dorset
